Miami Art Week 2026 Security Guide: Fairs, Dates & Venues

Miami Art Week 2026 runs from November 30 to December 6, 2026, with Art Basel Miami Beach at its center on December 4 to 6. Around it, more than a dozen satellite fairs open in tents on the sand, hotel suites, waterfront pavilions and Wynwood warehouses. Art Basel alone reported more than 80,000 visitors across its VIP and public days in 2025.

For a security company in South Florida, that adds up to one of the busiest weeks of event work in the year: overnight protection for high-value art, access control at VIP previews, crowd and queue management, and late-night parties across Miami and Miami Beach. This guide gives you the 2026 fair calendar, what each type of venue demands from a guard team, the Florida licensing rules for staffing up, and how to approach organizers. You can also download the full fair list, with every venue address, organizer and official website, as a free planner.

Dates and venues were checked against each fair’s official website and published listings on October 15, 2026. Organizers can change details, so confirm with the fair before you plan staffing. Novagems is not affiliated with Art Basel or any fair listed here.

Key dates for your Miami Art Week staffing plan

  • Late November: build and art installation start in the days before opening. Ask each fair for its move-in window, because this is when crated artwork sits in loading areas.
  • November 30: Miami Art Week begins.
  • December 1 to 3: VIP and press previews at most fairs. Art Basel’s invitation-only preview days are December 2 and 3.
  • December 4 to 6: Art Basel’s public days and the busiest weekend of the week.
  • December 6 and after: most fairs close, and tear-down and art move-out run into the following days.

For the wider program of parties, talks and pop-ups during the week, the calendar at miamiartweek.org is a useful starting point.

What makes art week security different

High-value art on site around the clock

Art arrives in crates days before the doors open and leaves after they close. During load-in and load-out, artwork sits half-unpacked in loading areas while dozens of vendors move through, so overnight static posts and roving patrols matter as much as daytime coverage.

Temporary structures on the beach

Untitled and InScope run in purpose-built pavilions on the sand. With no permanent walls or locks, controlled entry points, perimeter coverage and documented overnight rounds carry the load.

VIP previews and guest lists

Preview days bring collectors, celebrities and press. The work is credential and guest-list checks, separate entrances and discreet escorts rather than visible crowd control.

Crowds, queues and bag checks

On public days, the job shifts to queue management, bag checks and keeping exits clear. Art Basel’s 2025 attendance of more than 80,000 gives a sense of the scale at the main fair alone. Our event security services guide covers crowd ratios and emergency planning in more detail.

Hotel fairs

At Aqua and INK, art is shown in hotel rooms and suites, and fairgoers share corridors, elevators and stairwells with hotel guests. Coverage has to work floor by floor.

Traffic and multi-site coverage

The fairs are spread from Miami Beach to Wynwood, downtown and Coconut Grove, and the causeways between the Beach and the mainland are slow all week. Build buffer time into shift changes, keep relief guards close to each site, and use mobile patrol for multi-site fairs like Fridge.

Staffing up in Florida: licenses and pay

A week of 12-hour shifts across several venues means bringing in more guards than usual. Florida’s rules decide who you can post:

  • Every guard needs a Class D license from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), which requires 40 hours of training.
  • Armed posts need a Class G license on top of Class D, with 28 hours of firearms training.
  • Your company needs a Class B agency license to provide contract security in Florida.
  • There is no reciprocity. Florida does not accept other states’ guard licenses, so you cannot bring guards down from another state for the week on their home license. Plan surge staffing from your own Florida-licensed pool and trusted local partners.
  • Check every license before you post the guard. A lapsed license discovered on a VIP preview post is a serious problem for you and the organizer.
  • Price in overtime. Florida’s minimum wage rose to $15.00 an hour on September 30, 2026, and overtime applies after 40 hours a week under federal law. Six days of long shifts pushes most guards into overtime quickly.

Our Florida security guard license guide covers Class D and Class G in full, and how to start a security business in Florida covers the Class B agency license.

How to approach art fair organizers

  1. Start with the official website. Every fair above has a contact or partnerships page. Ask for the operations, fair management or production team, which is usually who handles vendors.
  2. Lead with capacity and proof. State how many Florida-licensed Class D and Class G guards you can commit for the exact dates, your supervisor coverage, your insurance, and how you will report: GPS-verified shift records, patrol logs and incident reports with photos.
  3. Offer overflow and subcontract support. If a fair already has a lead contractor, offer to cover previews, overnight posts or move-out, where extra hands are most often needed.
  4. Look beyond the fairs. Exhibiting galleries, hotels hosting fairs and parties, brand activations and private collector dinners all need security during the same week, and many are planned closer to the date.
  5. Pitch now. With the week starting November 30, staffing decisions are being made in October and early November.
  6. Send one tailored message and one follow-up. Organizers receive many vendor pitches in the fall, and a short, specific note gets read.

Running art week shifts with Novagems

A week like this tests scheduling more than anything else: previews, public days and overnight posts across several venues, with extra guards who may not know each site. Novagems keeps it in one place:

  • Drag-and-drop scheduling to cover every venue, preview and overnight post without gaps
  • GPS clock-in and geofencing so each guard can only start a shift at the right venue
  • Checkpoint tours that prove overnight rounds were completed in tents, halls and loading areas
  • Incident reports with photos filed from the guard’s phone, which matters if damage to an artwork is ever disputed
  • Alerts for missed clock-ins, overtime thresholds and expiring guard licenses
  • Client-ready reports to share with the organizer after the event

Frequently asked questions

When is Miami Art Week 2026?

Miami Art Week 2026 runs from November 30 to December 6, 2026. Art Basel Miami Beach, the anchor fair, is open to the public December 4 to 6, with invitation-only preview days on December 2 and 3. Most satellite fairs open between December 1 and 3 and close on December 6.

How many people attend Art Basel Miami Beach?

Art Basel reported more than 80,000 attendees across the VIP and public days of its 2025 Miami Beach edition. The satellite fairs add tens of thousands more: InScope alone expects more than 45,000 visitors in 2026, and Red Dot and Spectrum expect more than 40,000 between them.

Do security guards working Miami Art Week need a Florida license?

Yes. Every security officer working in Florida needs a Class D license from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), and armed officers also need a Class G license. The security company itself needs a Class B agency license. Florida does not accept other states’ guard licenses, so out-of-state guards cannot work the week on their home license.

How can a security company get work during Miami Art Week?

Contact each fair’s operations or production team through its official website, lead with how many Florida-licensed guards you can commit for the exact dates, and offer overflow or subcontract coverage if the fair already has a lead contractor. Exhibiting galleries, hotels, brand activations and private events around the fairs also hire security during the same week.

How does Novagems help security companies staff a multi-venue event week?

Novagems schedules shifts across every venue in one place, uses GPS clock-in and geofencing so guards can only start a shift at the right site, verifies overnight rounds with checkpoint scans, and lets guards file incident reports with photos from their phones. Managers get alerts for missed clock-ins, overtime thresholds and expiring licenses, plus client-ready reports to share with the organizer.
